Following the death of the king’s younger brother in 1584, it became clear that, according to custom, the French crown would pass to the Protestant Henri de Navarre, he being the next senior agnatic descendent of Louis IX. Henri III, probably influenced by his lover Anne de Joyeuse and under pressure from the Catholic Ligue, issues the Edict of Nemours, revoking many of the liberties previously accorded to Protestants and proclaiming Henri de Navarre unfit to inherit the throne.
